Jeff Scott, CMHC
Parent Coach, Young Person Mentor, Treatment Aftercare Specialist
Over the past 30 years I have worked in a variety of settings from therapeutic boarding schools to wilderness therapy supporting both young men and their parents in deepening bonds of affection and understanding. I have spent the majority of my career in wilderness therapy serving in the roles of primary therapist and clinical director.
I believe deeply in the power of wilderness to help adolescent males find their purpose and place in the world. Now, I am inspired by this opportunity to support young men in transitioning home and integrating what they have learned into the fabric of their daily lives.
I am particularly skilled at working with adolescent males struggling with anxiety, depression and a belief in their own powerlessness. I connect well with young people who may seem lost and who are struggling to meet the demands of life.
They are often experiencing a deep sense of shame and a general feeling of inadequacy, which leads them to go inward; they withdraw and isolate from their world and its challenges. These are the young men who often struggle quietly and secretly, internalizing their anger, fear and shame.
I am particularly skilled at working with adolescent males struggling with anxiety, depression and a belief in their own powerlessness.
I have my own sons who have certainly been my biggest teachers. Carl Jung believed that for parents “children swim in the sea of our own unconscious”. Once a child is born into a family, with or without conscious awareness, the parents have now signed up for at least an 18-year-long spiritual retreat.
I have learned as a parent that my sons have a remarkable ability to reflect back the parts of myself that I would really like to ignore. Yet, if we can approach with grace, courage and humility our kids can also be our teachers and healers.
I received both my Bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and Georgia.
When not chasing around two energetic boys I love to mountain bike, ski and hike. I am also attempting to satisfy multi-year New Year’s resolutions by learning Spanish.
